The September 10 Freeman’s | Hindman Fine Books & Manuscripts auction in Philadelphia features almost 300 lots of printed and manuscript Americana, Literature, Artist Books, Travel & Exploration, and more. The sale is led by a fine example of the first official broadside printing of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ($30,000-$50,000), a handsome first octavo edition of Audubon's The Birds of America ($20,000-$30,000), and a first edition of Andre Level's monograph on the art of Pablo Picasso, including the signed lithograph ($20,000-$30,000).
Other highlights include the scarce English edition of A Short Narrative of the Horrid Massacre in Boston,1770, recounting the events of that night ($10,000-$15,000); the monumental Arion Press edition of James Joyce's Ulysses with etchings by Robert Motherwell ($10,000-$15,000); a complete portfolio of Josef Albers Die Oberflache, featuring five signed screen prints ($10,000-$15,000); the earliest obtainable Connecticut printing of the U.S. Constitution ($10,000 - $15,000); 27 lots of rare and unique productions from the Black Sun Press; over 50 lots of fine first and rare editions of Charles Dickens from the collection of Dr. David L. Harrar II, including an original unpublished portrait of the great author ($8,000-$12,000).

Arms, Armor and Militaria Online

Cowan's Auctions proudly presents its final Summer Arms and Armor Sale for 2025! Kicking off the sale are an assortment of modern cartridge sporting arms, including a number of Cowboy Action guns and custom carry pistols, the latter including a scarce Smith & Wesson Model 39-2 ASP, and custom 1911s from Armand Swenson and Ed Brown. Shotgun collectors and shooters are encouraged to look at the Winchester Model 12 and 42 shotguns, along with customized Ljutic Mono-Guns. Rifles include custom examples from John Oberlies and Schmidt & Habermann, along with a number of US Property marked 22 caliber rifles. Military arms of the 20th Century include WWI and WWII vintage arms, such as an Izhevsk PU sniper rifle, and World War I era Luger. Antique arms will follow, including a Danish Model 1853/66 17mm rifle, and an Extremely Rare Confederate Inventory Numbered Enfield Rifle featuring the Post-War Roberts conversion. Colt revolvers will round out the Antiques before the sale proceeds to Historic Edged weapons, such as a US Blued and Gilt Blade Eagle Head saber. Afterward, Cowans will offer modern edged weapons consisting of custom knives by makers like Jimmy Lile, Chris Reeve, and Bill Luckett, followed by military knives like a Rare French Special Air Service knife. Finally, Cowan's will present a vast collection of militaria, including uniforms and accoutrements from the American Civil War, Spanish American War, First World War, Second World War, and Vietnam War. Among these are a 93rd Infantry marked Tunic, an archive lot presenting the jump jacket and medals of 101st Airborne veteran Keith Organ, who fought in World War II, rare articles from the 339th "Polar Bear" Infantry, and a painted Model 1917 helmet bearing the markings of the 1st Battalion 5th Marines. The sale will conclude with lots of modern magazines, and display boxes.

Led by an exceptional selection of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings, the sale features a rare view of New Hope tenements by Robert Spencer, nocturnes by George Sotter and Harry Leith-Ross, and several Bucks County landscapes by Daniel Garber, Edward Redfield, Walter Elmer Schofield, Fern Coppedge, RAD Miller, John Folinsbee, Lillian Montague and many others. The artworks are complemented by classic 18th-century furniture, including pieces made in Pennsylvania, in addition to a charming group of majolica tablewares, tinware lighting and garden seating accents.
